Preface
This book is not an exercise in Reasoning or about Reason. Instead this book is about the spring, of which Reason itself is born. That spring is Cosmic Consciousness in which each one of us partakes, and yet this spring, or the zone of consciousness, may remain hidden from us all our life. The pursuers of the spiritual path have upheld that the realization of this zone of consciousness is the most desirable goal of human life; one that gives true meaning to it.
Cosmic Consciousness, a Life-force, a certain Living Principle of life, God, call it what we may, runs each and every living and non-living entity and the Cosmic Whole. In realizing oneness with this power, this Light within, this zone of our consciousness, we transcend our limited self and experience properties of the Universal Self or Reality: Oneness, Love, Bliss. Not only may it bring us individual Nirvana, Illumination, a Spiritual Re-Birth, a Kingdom of Heaven Within, of this spiritual experience may also be born a Gospel—a World Vision—that may point the next way for the caravan of humanity. History of humanity may be seen as a history of so many of its Gospels; each Gospel a milestone in humanity’s journey. Gospel points the direction towards which humanity should go to remain on the Cosmic Way: The Way of Oneness of All Things.
GOSPEL OF PEACE is the “Divine Pointer” for the caravan of humanity. It upholds the, global spiritual traditions and the essence of all previous scriptures: the Oneness of Ultimate Reality. Gospel of Peace is the thread to knit the many beads of global scriptures. Gospel of Peace is the light to see the organic oneness of the scriptural flower, of which each scripture is a petal. No one scripture can be fully understood except in the light of all scriptures, the summation of the human spiritual experience—a light which every cultural tradition denies to itself every day. Gospel of Peace is about that summation: the spiritual Oneness of Humanity—nay; of all life on this earth and about the Oneness of the Cosmos of which all life is a part.

Darkness
I felt all dark around me. Personally everything on the outside was all right for me. I was young, about twenty-five, was recently married, had a son (Arvind) whom I intensely loved, and had a reasonably good job. It was the inner anguish, the inner search, a similar one which had sent the young Sidhartha (The Buddha) to wilderness.
It was India not long after independence. The events of 1947, the massacre, rape, caravans of refugees, all of this had deeply affected me when I was about sixteen and just finishing my high school. None of my immediate family was hurt but it seemed my larger human family lay bleeding in the streets. 1947 came and passed like a hurricane leaving behind a vast human wreckage. In the incinerator of history generations are thrown, destroyed and forgotten. The euphoria of independence and the hope it kindled seemed to overpower the misery and the social hatred that had led to killings and the partition of India.
Leaving behind the rural world of my childhood, I moved from a small town in the Punjab to Delhi, a big city. The noise and confusion of urban life, the prevailing poverty and the slums where I repeatedly wandered called by the human pain, and the general feeling of helplessness added to my anguish. To top all this were the deeper questions about the meaning and purpose of human life and individually my own. I had grown up in the safe haven of the world of Gods, Lord Rama and Lord Krishana, whose protective hands I always felt. My family traced a special connection of loyalty and devotion to Baba Farid—the great Muslim Mystic and Sufi of the 13th century—so much so that, following the family tradition, I grew up for the first two years wrapped in an unstitched sack of cloth symbolizing the life of a “Fakir”—a mendicant. The Sufi tradition mingled so well with the Saint tradition of Guru Nanak and the Sikh Gurus, whose religious writings were a part of daily prayers. All in all, a very syncretic world of religion. But I was now drawn to the secular and intellectual tradition and had entered the dual lanes of the Mind where everything is point and counter-point. In about ten years at about twenty-five I felt darkness around. It seemed to me that I was standing between History, the Monster and Brutal on one end and the Cosmos, Infinite and Overwhelming on the other. I had to discover my connection with both and I wonder if even that I understood well. That is how it seemed:
IT WAS LIKE THE NIGHT LOOKED AT ITS OWN DARKNESS.
DRAPED IN ITS OWN DARKNESS NIGHT WANDERED ALONE AND SHIVERED IN FEAR.
LEST THE HIGHWAYMEN OF FATE SHOULD LAY THE AMBUSH.
TO SLAY FOR SLAYING IS GOOD. TO PLAY THE GAME OF BLOOD LETTING WHEN NO ONE DARE STOP.
THE DEVILS WHO ALWAYS WORK IN THE NIGHT: FOR THEY ARE THE CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT.
SITTING ON THE EDGES OF THE TORTUOUS ROADS THEY FILL IN GOBLETS OF INNOCENT BLOOD AND DRINK.
NOW THE NIGHT TREMBLED ALONE AND SEARCHED FOR THE LIGHT.
WHERE IS THE LIGHT?
HOW MUST NIGHT GIVE BIRTH EVEN TO ONE RAY FROM THE WOMB OF ITS OWN DARKNESS?
BUT BEFORE THAT COMES NIGHT MUST REMAIN SPRAWLED ON THE BODY OF THE UNIVERSE COUNTING BREATH AFTER BREATH.
WHY IS THERE NIGHT?
THE SEERS AND THE WISE ONES; THE SAVANTS AND SAGES, THE MASTERS OF SCIENCE SAY: ‘NIGHT MUST BE THERE BECAUSE THERE IS THE DAY; DARKNESS IS THERE FOR THE LIGHT IS THERE’.
NIGHT AND DARKNESS ARE BUT THE LIVING OPPOSITES OF THE DAY AND THE LIGHT.
FROM THE ONE EDGE OF DARKNESS TO THE OTHER, IN THE HOLLOW OF NOTHINGNESS I CRY OUT; ‘BUT WHY IS THE DAY THERE?’
THE WISDOM AT ITS BEST GOING ROUND IN CIRCLES ECHOES THROUGH HOLLOW SPACE THE UNIMPEACHABLE WORDS LIKE THAT OF FATE: ‘THE DAY IS THERE FOR THE NIGHT IS THERE’.
WHY THEN THE DAY AND THE NIGHT EXIST?
WHY THIS CYCLE OF THINGS?
WHY THIS SEA-SAW OF OPPOSITES?
WHY THIS RHYTHMIC DANCE OF LIFE AND DEATH?
THE DEITIES OF DIALECT, THE CONQUERORS OF REFLECTION FROM THE SUMMITS OF THOUGHT SPEAK: ‘BECAUSE LIFE IS CHANGE; IT IS A SEE-SAW OF THINGS’,
THERE IS NO CONSTANCY, FOR CONSTANCY IS DEATH: WHEN NOTHING MOVES AND ALL STAYS THE SAME.
LIFE IS THE CONSTANT DYING OF THINGS.
EACH AND ALL MUST DIE; YOU TOO MUST DIE LIKE ALL THE REST.
THIS DANCE OF DEATH ALONE IS CALLED LIFE.
FOR LIFE COMES OUT OF THIS PERISHING, THIS DESTRUCTION, THIS MUTATION.
BE IT THE LOTUS, THE LILY, THE LYRIC FROM A BROKEN-HEART, OR THE FIRST CRY OF A NEW BORN CHILD.
THUS, ON DEATH YOU HAVE NO HOLD.
ON DARKNESS YOU HAVE NO HOLD, FOR YOU HAVE NO HOLD ON NIGHT.
IT IS NOW YOUR LONG NIGHT, THE JOURNEY THAT YOUR SOUL MUST MAKE.
THIS NIGHT, THIS DARKNESS, IS THE PASSAGE, IS THE TUNNEL THROUGH WHICH YOU MUST PASS FOR THE DAY TO COME.
LIKE YOU CANNOT HOLD THE NIGHT, YOU CANNOT HOLD THE DAY EITHER.
FOR YOU IS ONLY TO LAST THROUGH THE NIGHT.
THE PENANCE OF SUFFERING IS THE WAGES YOU MUST PAY TO SEE THE END OF DARKNESS.
THIS IS THE SEE-SAW OF THINGS IN WHICH YOU ARE CAUGHT LIKE A SPECK OF DUST IN WHIRLWINDS OF SAND.
YET THAT IS NOT THE ONLY DARKNESS I SEE: THE DARKNESS OF NOT KNOWING ‘WHY IS WHAT IS’.
THERE IS THE DARKNESS OF HUMAN SUFFERING, THE ABSURDITY AND PAIN OF THINGS AROUND.
CARAVANS OF HOMELESS HUMANS, BUNDLED UP IN PRIMITIVE BULLACARTS, TRUCKING THEIR WAY THROUGH THE MUDDY ROADS OF THE SUB-CONTINENT OF MY MOTHERLAND.
YOUNG AND OLD, MAIMED DRAGGING THE CORPSES’ OF THEIR OWN BODIES, LEAVING BEHIND THE CHARCOALED BODIES OF THOSE THEY LOVED AND NOURISHED.
IT IS A SCENE OUT OF HELL ENACTED IN THE STREETS AND THE OPEN FIELDS WHERE ONCE THESE HUMANS PLAYED AND SANG SONGS OF HOPE AND JOY.
THIS IS A MASSACRE IN THE NAME OF RELIGION AND ITS GODS.
IT IS A MASSACRE IN THE NAME OF NEW BORN NATIONS AND WHAT THEY PROMISE.
IT IS A MASSACRE TO WASH IDOLS OF CLAY AND OF IDEAS TO SANCTIFY THROUGH HUMAN BLOOD.
FOR BLOOD ALONE SANCTIFIES SUCH GODS.
THERE ARE LEPERS CRAWLING ON THE ROADS BEGGING A LOAF OF BREAD.
YOUNG GIRLS EXCHANGE THEIR INNOCENCE FOR ONE NIGHT’S MEAL.
ORPHANS SING SONGS OF SELF-PITY AND SELF-DEPRIVATION FOR A DROP OF HUMAN COMPASSION.
AND IT IS A LAND WHERE VEDIC HYMNS ARE SUNG DAY AND NIGHT; THE HOLY KORAN IS RECITED CEASELESSLY; EVERY SCRIPTURE IS READ OUT IN THE ANCIENT HOUSES OF WORSHIP; AND THE DEVOTIONAL MUSIC OF THE SAINT POETS SCENTS THE AIR.

A Dot of Light
There is a deep spiritual, a mystical, an occult meaning to every event. Only the ordinary human mind does not know how to read it. Also, there are ‘Soul Moments’ which, like a keyhole, show to us the larger reality hidden behind the closed doors. Such a moment had come for me.
It was a summer evening in Delhi in the month of May or June (1958) when the air shimmers with heat even in the evening. I had gone to see off my mother on the railway station. I stopped on the book stall on the railway platform not so much for buying a book but in search of a whiff of air from the electric fan. Turning the pages of a book (which was on Sri Aurobindo’s philosophy) I came across a few lines the essence of which was that there is a centre of power within each one of us. In an instant I saw a dot of light—Light Celestial—somewhere far away but within me. I bought the book and devoured its contents in the dim light of a lamp post while waiting for the bus for about an hour. When I reached home it was past mid-night. For me a new dawn had begun.
That night I slept with a feeling that “I am immortal”—something that I had experienced earlier in a fleeting way, though had lost it.
But I knew that I had a long way to go.
Spiritual Journey
Imagine a journeyman surrounded by darkness all around. In spiritual language there are some who move “From Darkness to Darkness” and there are others who move from “Darkness to Light” as I had begun—the blessing for me to move from “Light To Light” was yet twenty-five years away.
In the midst of darkness one walks towards a distant dot of Light. Constantly facing the Light sets the direction. The existence of Light also gives hope that there is something concrete that one is moving towards.
For me from that night on the railway station my “Spiritual Journey” became the highest priority—even while I led an active life in every way.
In 1961 I left for the West (London, England) for doctoral studies. From the boat I wrote a letter to a friend saying “I have very little of material resources. But I have discovered a reality within me—a Higher Power—to which I can surrender everything. This is my main resource as I sail to new lands.”
For about two decades starting with 1959 I pursued, with utmost devotion, various spiritual practices: physical yoga, the yoga of Mind, meditation and above all consciousness transformation. Far more than formal study and practice I found, like a lamp in a dark forest, I was led by the person and spirituality of some of the Indian mystics both in the Sufi and in the Yoga tradition (especially Baba Farid, Guru Nanak, Sri Ramakrishana, Mira, and Sri Aurobindo). I enjoyed tremendous benefits from my spiritual practices by way of inner equanimity, release of psychic energy, and good physical health. With a deep commitment to socialist ideals, I was actively involved in issues of social justice (in relation to the social struggle in India and of the oppressed people in the ‘Third World’ in general, human rights issues, etc.). Then a terrible event happened in my life.
My son, Arvind, at age twenty-three, was killed in 1978 in a hit and run accident in Toronto (where I was settled since 1966 for my university teaching job). I was awakened in the middle of the night by police to tell me that Arvind was gone from this world.
The “Dark Night of the Soul” that the mystics speak about had come for me. There seems to be a deep connection between spirituality and suffering. It was clear to me that I had been thrown into a dark ocean of grief and no shore was in sight. I cried out “I want to be an Empty Jar”, an “Empty Jar”, lines which I would inscribe page after page in my diary. It is obvious I wanted to empty myself of grief.
But the wheel of suffering had just begun to move. My marriage began to disintegrate, my parents had to leave my home within a year of my son’s death, my own life was threatened by illness in 1980, the treatment lasting over two years and almost the day when I looked to some kind of normalcy of health, my father died, not being able to endure the overall suffering; within a year it was discovered that my mother had cancer, followed by four years of various ailments and disability. In 1983, I had a heart strain while I was trying to cope with my mother’s illness. On top of all this I had to wander homeless, with my mother to care for, in search of some place where I could look after her, till her death on the last day of 1987.
Each day of these about ten years was so full of unhappiness that each day was an uphill struggle. But the period after 1978 also became a period of intense and deepened spiritual search. Emptying or purifying the inner self, total inner silence, self-surrender to the Divine, dynamic meditation, pursuit of truth, etc. became interrelated spiritual techniques.
There was growing inner peace and a transparent sense of the Divine Presence within as well as a heightened awareness of the Divine Presence in everything around. The healing and purifying power of Nature—living Nature, its beauty, its mystery, its vastness—became, for me, the most paramount everyday experience. By early 1983 it was clear that I had reached, what, looking back, I call, “the Door of the Divine”. The door was yet not opened for me. Before that was to occur I experienced intimations with some of the major prophetic souls (Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed to mention only a few), the “Great Masters who walked with me” in my spiritual journey. These spiritual experiences always left a great purifying effect on me. I can say these intimations had the effect of spiritual bathing for me. My soul was now ready sitting at the “Door of the Divine to open. But I did not know about Enlightenment. In fact, I doubted it as a meaningful experience. To me spirituality was essentially for having inner peace in a troubled world.

Enlightenment
About the spiritual experience of June 16, 1984, I recorded the following in my diary:
There is a state of consciousness which is described as Nirvana, Enlightenment, Self- Realization, Illumination, Satori, Re-Birth, UN-AL-HAQ, Cosmic Consciousness, etc. By whatever name it is called, I have realized that state; it took me close to twenty five years.
As usual I went for my morning walk. It was a clear and a sunny day. Being the week-end it was unusually calm with little traffic. There was a cool breeze. As I descended the stairs (in the Garden, the Edward Garden in Toronto) and passed over the wooden bridge leading to the inside of the park, I felt that a calmness unknown to me was beginning to descend on me. This was not my first visit to the garden; I had been there many, many times over the ten or so years that I lived in the neighbourhood.
As I advanced a few steps I felt a unique sense of oneness with everything around me.
I looked at the sky above and everything around me: the trees, the branches, leaves, blades of grass, the flowers, everything around me and what was beyond, the sun, the moon, the clouds, the stars and the visible and invisible galaxies. Every particle of this universe was in me and I in it. I looked at the sky and saw the bright rays of the sun filtering through the leaves of the tree which stood so tall above, in front of me. In these rays of the sun I saw the very face of the Light. I looked at the flowers around, at the blue-mauvish flowers; they talked to me and I could communicate with them. I was overwhelmed with joy and kissed the flowers. I was so filled with joy, turned back a step, and again kissed the flowers. I kissed them a third time. My eyes were filled with tears. I sat on the bench nearby under the tree with my face covered in the two palms of my hands and I wept. Something in me asked . . . “why have you been carrying the burden of ordinariness, the ordinariness of life? This ordinary life.” I felt that literally a wet blanket made of ginny-bag fell off me; the blanket of ordinary life. I got up from the bench and began to proceed further for a walk. I was all covered in and around me with joy and Bliss and consciousness transformed in an instant.
About the experience of June 16, 1984, I have continued to write ever since. The spiritual experience is so valuable to me for what it has brought to me that I would not barter it for the material wealth of this life and my previous lives. And this is not an intellectual statement but exactly how I feel. It is like someone were to “see” two things and have no doubt that one is more valuable than the other. Ever since that moment it has been one uninterrupted block of Bliss, Oneness and Love. In that one instant was burnt, like dry reed, all past consciousness and suffering that was endemic to that consciousness. The full account of the effect of that transformation is not possible to write. Even one day’s account would fill many volumes. I was walking and living in the rain of billions of particles of Bliss. An ocean of Love opened up inside. All creation became my own. In short, Cosmic Consciousness, the Cosmic Being, took over completely; it was all one Divine Presence.
Then, about two months later, around 4:00 in the early hours of the morning I was awakened by the same Divine Presence, and “a Voice spoke to me”:
TAKE THY PEN AND WRITE. “I” SHALL SPEAK TO YOU THE LAST BOOK. THE GOSPEL OF PEACE.
START WITH THE BEGINNING. THERE WAS NO BEGINNING. “I” NEVER CREATED ANYTHING.
THERE WAS NO MOMENT OF BIRTH, NOR SHALL BE ONE OF DEATH; OF THE UNIVERSE.
DO NOT BE CONFOUNDED AND WRITE.
“I” NEVER CREATED ANYTHING OUTSIDE AND APART FROM “MYSELF”.
. . . . . . . . . .
“I” WILL SPEAK TO YOU FROM HEAVEN AND FROM EARTH; FROM WITHIN YOU AND FROM OUTSIDE OF YOU; FOR “I AM” EVERYWHERE.
THIS IS YOUR FIRST STANZA. THIS KNOWLEDGE IS GIVEN TO YOU IN THE DEAD OF THE NIGHT WAKING YOU UP.
WAIT AS MORE COMES TO YOU.

KEEP IN MIND THIS COMING FORTH TO YOU IS LIKE THE POURING DOWN OF THE RAIN. THE RAIN OF TRUTH.

“I AM” GIVING YOU THE LAST BOOK; YOUR LAST BOOK; IT IS YOUR GOSPEL.
WHETHER “I” GIVE MORE TO ANOTHER; WHEN OR WHERE TO WHOM IS “MY” CHOICE. FOR, ALONE “I AM”.

“I” SENT FOR YOU THE GREAT MASTERS TO BE THE GUIDES FOR YOU. “I” SENT TO YOU THE BUDDHA AND THEN JESUS TO LIVE WITH YOU, TO BREATHE WITH YOU, TOUCH YOU, PURIFY YOUR THOUGHTS AND MIND. LAST OF ALL “I” SENT MOHAMMED TO YOU WITHOUT WHOSE TOUCH NO SOUL MAY ADVANCE HEREAFTER TO CERTAIN SPIRITUAL SUMMITS. IT IS THE SPIRIT OF THESE THAT CLEANSED YOU OF EVERY IMPURITY AND READIED YOU. IT IS IN THAT PURIFIED VACANCY “I” CAME AND CHOSE YOUR INSIDE TO BE “MY” ABODE.
I have written, above, part of what was ‘given’ to me that night and which, thereafter, I have been recording. As I went through that experience one thing became clear; this writing was not an intellectual product in the ordinary sense of the term, to which I was accustomed and which I still produce, although constantly find far less useful. There is something which set these words apart from the usual intellectual product just like there was something which set that spiritual moment apart. These were scriptural words. It was also clear that there was some deep relationship between the two experiences: the spiritual re-birthing and receiving the scriptural word. The birth of every scripture seems to be tied up with, and is a product of, the Spiritual Re-Birthing of the individual, of experiencing the state which is known by a variety of names, as I said in the beginning: the Nirvanic state, Enlightenment, Satori, Self-Realization, UN-AL-HAQ, Illumination, Re-Birth, Realizing the Supra-mental or Cosmic Consciousness.
What follows is the ‘Book of Revelations’. The detailed story of the spiritual journey leading up to the ‘Revelations,’ and also the abstracted knowledge based on the actual experience (what I call ‘Consciousness Yoga’), must await some other occasion. The collection of ‘Revelations’ is more or less in the order in which the ‘Revelations’ “came” to me. It seems appropriate to share these so, at least in the first instance. Most of what is in the ‘Book of Revelations’ took birth during the years of 1984 and 1985, and there was relatively less and less thereafter. The process has its own life, of course, and is by no means over; more keeps coming but it seems time to share the experience. Since the ‘Book of Revelations’ is given here “as it is”, it also means that it is not arranged by ‘themes’. The reader will, of course, recognize various themes, the major ones being the following:
(a) the nature of Ultimate Reality as One and as a Living Reality—the cosmic thread that runs through each and all, and holds the Cosmic Whole together;
(b) the social evolution of humans as the negation of Oneness;
(c) human destiny, both individual and collective, to realize the presence within of this Living Reality (what is called realizing the state of Enlightenment); and,
(d) the dawn of the era of the prophetic-spirit; the spiritual transformation of the collective consciousness of humanity and the coming into being of the Age of Peace and Enlightenment.
In the ‘Book of Revelations’ there is a progression from what appears as addressing an individual—in this case me—to the more universal. To me it is clear that the real addressee is the Universal Human. I am the medium; not the mediator. The Mediator, the source of these ‘Revelations’—in fact, of all knowledge—is the Transcendental. In other words, ‘Revelations’ are from a Universal source and are also for a Universal purpose. Transcendental need not mean extraneous, outside, or foreign to us humans or to existence in general. The source is Transcendental in the sense that it is greater and beyond any one entity or the existence as a whole. But the Transcendental is also Immanent; it permeates everything. In the language of the ‘Revelations’, ‘ALONE “I AM”. THERE IS NO OTHER REALITY.’ It is this cosmic awareness, an awareness of the Divine Presence in everything, everywhere, which the humans lack and which is the source of all evil, sin and suffering. The inner darkness and unhappiness is the other side of the lack of this spiritual Enlightenment. Also, it is the lack of this spiritual Enlightenment that humans tolerate so much of social injustice, ugly poverty, unequal sharing of the gift and joys of life, cruelty, tyranny and violence—congealed in varied forms of social structures throughout human history. Each Scripture reaffirms the Oneness of Ultimate Reality—that is what makes all Scriptures look similar—and a Scripture also states a new set of values, creates a new ethos, a new Weltanschauung, at a particular historical juncture. It is this accent on new values, on new consciousness, which makes a particular Scripture a particular kind of Divine intervention in history.

THAT IS THE END OF YOUR DARKNESS; HUMAN DARKNESS.

THERE IS NO OTHER REALITY. THERE NEVER WAS; THERE NEVER WILL BE.

THEY SAW IN THIS SEED OF EVIL, SUFFERING AND DESTRUCTION.
THE EVIL IS THE NEGATION OF “I AM”.
THE RECOGNITION THAT ALL IS ONE AND THAT RECOGNITION IS GOOD, IS TRUTH.
THE ROAD OF DIVISION IS STREWN WITH PAIN, VIOLENCE, HATRED AND SUFFERING.
THE ROAD OF ONENESS OF THINGS IS FULL OF LOVE, SHARING AND JOY.

THE BOUNDARIES OF DIVISION BOTH IN THEIR CONSCIOUSNESS AND IN THEIR ABODES OF LIVING.

THEY SERVE TOO MUCH THE GREED AND THE EGO OF THE FEW.

IN THE NATURAL STATE IT IS NOT TO KNOW ONESELF AND THE THINGS AROUND.
HUMAN ALONE IS CONSCIOUS.

Book II: Afterward
What Is the Work of the Divine?
Spiritual advancement is accompanied by the dropping off of individual ego-centric seeking. What is described as Enlightenment is a certain culmination point often of a very long and intense process (to be distinguished from an episodal, fleeting, even if repeated, psychic experiences of a variety). We may say that with Enlightenment one is fulfilled: the cup of individual consciousness is so widened that it is cosmisized. One experiences a state of Love which depends on nothing, it is Self-Existent; one experiences a state of Bliss which depends on nothing; it is Self-Existent. One feels that all is “my creation”, “everything, everywhere is part of me”. All life seems one’s own family; all seems connected of which one is an organic part.
The Divine work is to share this spiritual awareness, this spiritual truth, with others—not to set oneself apart but—for raising general awareness about the nature of Reality which is our own hidden Higher-Self which is everywhere and is the same in each one of us. As this spiritual awareness becomes the ordinary consciousness of the human race humanity will realize its spiritual oneness—a necessary pre-condition of socio-political oneness too.
The Divine work is this spiritual education work which is not to be understood like the usual intellectual educational work. Spiritual work is about the healing of life, the purification of forces that cause injury, pain and violence to the oneness of the fabric of human life; in fact all life. Spirituality is about the “Oneness of All Things” and its individual and social realization. Spiritual self-perfection is also to prepare oneself to be a fit instrument for the work of the Divine in this world.
Throughout my spiritual journey I was an active participant in various activities—social and intellectual. I particularly want to mention my involvement in the issues of social justice over a number of years. From 1979 onwards, I was drawn into the concern for global peace. My book, “Manifesto For a Peaceful Order” (1983), was an attempt to offer an outline of an alternative paradigm, a Peace Paradigm, we well as forge the link between the spiritual and the social. World University of Peace (Toronto) was founded in 1983—following publication of the “Manifesto”, to disseminate this alternative Paradigm; work which is continuing. The experience of June 1984 completed the process of “spiritualization” for me and both the direction and the form of the work “Afterward” accordingly took a deepened spiritual meaning. The first step was to publish, on September 8, 1984, an open letter that follows.
Making a Call: From Human Consciousness to Cosmic Consciousness
This open letter is intended to share some of my personal spiritual experience. It was initially meant for a limited circle of those with whom I have shared over the years a variety of interests, specifically my spiritual interests. As days have passed and I have been reflecting, it is clear to me that this letter should be addressed to everyone; to all humanity; all those who are presently living and the generations to come, for the contents of this letter should be of interest to all. Whatever worth readers find, it is up to them. The main aim of this letter is to share the following ideas:

There is a state of consciousness which has been variedly described in different cultural traditions: Nirvanic state, Self-realization, Enlightenment, Re-Birth, Satori, UN-AL-HAQ, Cosmic Consciousness, Supra-mental, Revelation, Illumination, etc. This state which transcends the ordinary state of human mind is considered desirable to achieve because of its certain properties: of bliss, light, truth, oneness with God and all creation, etc. This premise is the starting point of this letter.

Hitherto, the received spiritual tradition has been to emphasize the desirability of achieving this state of Cosmic Consciousness from the individual standpoint. Its collective and evolutionary purpose has not been fully understood. In recent times some thinkers (e.g., Sri Aurobindo, Teilhard de Chardin, various ‘New Age’ thinkers) have emphasized its evolutionary purpose, thus focusing on the idea that the ”Human is a Transitional Being”, and Nature is evolving towards a higher being, a spiritual being with a higher consciousness. While I am skeptical about the underlying spiritual determinism of this perspective, I do take the view that collective and evolutionary significance of spirituality for the human species for life on this planet, in fact beyond it, is of great value. Central to the Science of Spirituality, if we may use the phrase, should be collective humanity, and not just the individual.

The next theme which this letter intends to share is that if humanity does not make the quantum leap to this Cosmic Consciousness (i.e., a new Spiritual Being is not born) humanity would not be able to cross the bridge of our current “Survival Crisis”. Human consciousness has brought us as far as it could. Now the contradictions which this consciousness and the social structures it supports generates, the major contradictions of the modern world, it is not capable of solving. Only by transcending existing consciousness into Cosmic Consciousness can we deal with the current crisis and out of the new consciousness create a new peaceful world order. A collective spiritual revolution in consciousness has become a pre-condition of human survival (and of survival of all life on this earth). Spirituality is no more a question of being personally more blissful—which, too, is the effect—it is a question of the very collective survival. Nor can spirituality remain the solitary pursuit of the few; it must become the concern of millions, in fact of all humanity. For we cannot survive at the present level of human consciousness and the type of social order in which we now live. Survival can only be at a higher level of consciousness, which will also become the basis for the superior level of social orders.

While we must make the quantum leap to Cosmic Consciousness, an evolutionary challenge that humanity cannot avoid or postpone (and there may be some evolutionary purpose in humanity facing this urgency) the received spiritual tradition has not only been to confine the parameters of the Science of Spirituality to individual development, it has also tended to mystify it. Spirituality is the ‘Secret Doctrine’, the ‘Esoteric’, the ‘Hidden Secret’, and something which is for the chosen few. It has often been seen as a journey not completable in one lifetime, and so on. I am convinced, on the basis of my own experience, that it is possible to attain the state of self-enlightenment, or Cosmic Consciousness, within a lifetime and in a relatively short period, given the right method and intensity of will. One has to accept it as a definite journey to be made and then, programmatically, set about to do it.
It is in relation to this last theme that I want to share more with you. The intent of what I write below is to share my own experience in relation to Cosmic Consciousness and make a call on everyone for this great enterprise of evolutionary spirituality to serve the individual and collective purpose in one.
As I have said above, there is a state of consciousness described by a variety of names—Nirvanic state, Self-realization, Illumination, Consciousness, Enlightenment, etc.—and it has been deemed as a much cherished state. It took me twenty five years to experience this state of consciousness. But I must say at the outset, in all candidness, that I never believed in this state of consciousness as a distinct state, in which one enters and experiences an altered consciousness. Whenever I thought of such celebrated examples as the Buddha, Jesus, or Mohammed seeing the light—the ‘divine light’
I always took it as a culmination point of their spiritual efforts but not realizing a state of new consciousness. The “seeing” of the light I often interpreted as a state of ecstasy at best or hallucination at worst, or simply the final gathering point of a long effort and seeking light in one’s own long inner struggle. While I did not believe in this final point of light, I did believe in the importance and usefulness of spiritual practice to achieve inner transformation.
In the past we evolved to the human state without consciously steering our evolution. But once in the human state evolutionary leaps can be made in a short time. Spirituality is conscious evolution, a concentrated form of evolution. That is, what we may achieve through the slow, tardy process of natural evolution we may achieve that through spiritual techniques in a short time through conscious evolution. There is, of course, the challenge of making a choice as to which direction we should evolve. The biggest dilemma underlying our current global crises may be this great dilemma of “Evolutionary Choice”: the choice as to which side we go hereafter. There is no automatic, assured guiding hand of Nature; we have to direct our own evolution. This is the destiny of being human. Spirituality is about human evolution of a specific type. It is consciously guiding consciousness into a certain direction, of transforming this existing stuff of ego-centric mind into a specific type of consciousness characterized by unitiveness, bliss, love, non-violence, etc. To achieve this transformation there are various methods; some of which, peculiarly my own, born of my experience, I practiced. I found the spiritual practice both challenging and rewarding.
Spiritual practice gave me working peace, and as a summary description of my long experience, looking back I would say that the biggest reward of spiritual practice was that I was able to pass through the storms of life almost ‘straight as an arrow’ and I should add that I had more than the average share of suffering. I continued, over the years, the practice of various spiritual methods. I took my spiritual life very seriously right from the beginning, once I started from what, to me, was the phase of “inner darkness” in my life (some twenty five years ago). Spiritual life for me became a promise and a hope of light beyond this darkness. But I was not convinced of the destination point of the state of Enlightenment or Cosmic Consciousness. Then, after twenty five years, one day at a particular moment I felt I had entered into a state of consciousness which was distinct and different from the previous state. It verily was realizing Enlightenment, Cosmic Consciousness. Of course, I was immediately confronted by two questions: how to verify the true or real nature of what I had experienced, and what to do next? The real proof of my experience was, of course, what I felt within; my actual experience. I set about to study the recorded historical experiences—the celebrated examples being those of the Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed, and Sri Aurobindo, whose yoga of the supramental had been the starting point as well as the major interest for me. These readings about the experience of Enlightenment have been the most enjoyable and rewarding readings for me. But the real proof is within; the actual realization, the experience of the state of Enlightenment, of being in Cosmic Consciousness. My interest in all these readings was to know what others experienced and not to lay any claim to a special status or claim to be the chosen one of God—although one effect of realizing Cosmic Consciousness is, in the ultimate, to feel complete Oneness. One feels, in a sense, “I am That”. No wonder there is so much confusion, and debate can arise if one were to take, as many do, that the individual is claiming “I am God”, or some such thing. In fact, no one becomes God. What happens is that one’s ordinary egoistic consciousness melts away and a higher consciousness, Cosmic Consciousness, takes over. Not that the individual becomes God—if one may use the commonly understood expression—but that God (or Godhood) fills the individual’s inner self. Examples of altered states of consciousness abound in life. We are quite familiar with, for instance, a person with conservative and reactionary views become radical. The old consciousness sort of disappears (some would say, of course, never quite totally; the same may be said of egoistic consciousness) and the new consciousness takes over. The whole point is that Cosmic Consciousness is a consciousness with very definable properties and although (like an abrupt historical event radicalizing someone’s consciousness) one may develop Cosmic Consciousness rather abruptly, generally it can be realized only by long study and practice. There are many aspects of Cosmic Consciousness, and if ordinary human consciousness is so deep and rich there is no reason to believe that Cosmic Consciousness would not be still deeper and richer, even if its one hallmark is transparency and simplicity.
I am writing copious notes on the nature of Cosmic Consciousness based on my own experience. The value of these notes is not in what I think about some issues but instead, in what I see or experience. It is not an intellectual, but an experiential, evidence. I have been studying all this with the spirit of scientific inquiry. There are many interesting aspects of realizing Cosmic Consciousness, ranging from such fundamental questions as death to everyday struggle, but absolute peace, bliss, and oneness with the infinite are some of the instant effects. With Enlightenment, all of the old—anxiety, fear, attachment, ego—is burnt away like dry reeds in a fire.
From a personal standpoint it is undoubtedly a desirable state to achieve, and the literature is filled with praise for the intoxication that the wine of self-realization gives. The personal reward, in other words, of peace and bliss alone, are so obvious that if I were to do it all over again, and go through the hardships and suffering, I would still do it. Life, which always looked to me so much of an inner suffering, now seems worth the experience because of this bliss. It is like having the ultimate treasure, the treasure of inner bliss, the Kingdom of Heaven Within that Jesus spoke about.
While the personal effects are rather obvious, the social dimension of Cosmic Consciousness and the collective transition from the Human Consciousness to Spiritual Consciousness is not too obvious. It is with social consideration, the collective human consideration, in mind that I have decided to write this open letter because, in my view, we are facing the Evolutionary Crisis right now. This evolutionary challenge we cannot postpone. Each member of the human species faces it and must do his or her part. What is this challenge?
Currently humanity is facing a crisis, a crisis of survival. What explains this crisis? There are a variety of explanations but most of them trace the cause of the crisis to the post-World War II developments and, more specifically, to the nuclear genie somehow getting out of the bottle. Instead, I view this as a civilizational crisis, the roots of which go back to the beginning of the modern era in 1500 A.D. But that, too, is a limited perspective. What happened from 1500 A.D. onwards cannot be severed from previous periods in history. As we trace back in history and enter the recesses of pre-history, which takes us further back into the evolutionary life process, we come face to face with very fundamental issues, including the meaning of human destiny and the human potential. The entire evolution of life, and of human life, is an evolution of consciousness and the material and social forms it takes which, in turn, mould consciousness.
What is the next stage of consciousness? There is not one, but a variety, of possibilities. We may enter the era of robot consciousness, when machines will think for us and maybe, at a later date, will think for themselves; and we humans—the organic thinking computers—would disappear, making place for the human-made inorganic computers. There are some other possibilities. One of the possibilities that lies within us is the potential to expand our consciousness, and to expand it so much that it becomes one with the Cosmic Consciousness (i.e., the consciousness which runs through the entire Cosmos and sustains it). If one does not believe in the concept of Cosmic Consciousness one cannot still rule out the desirability and possibility of ‘ widening human consciousness and deepening it such that it acquires the properties of love, wisdom, oneness with the universe, peace and non-violence. These are not simply intellectual values to be believed in but a state of consciousness to be experienced. This is what the Spiritual Project is: the project of transforming ordinary consciousness into spiritual consciousness (Nirvanic or Cosmic Consciousness refer to more definitive states of spiritual consciousness). This spiritual project, which contains within it the current project of human survival and of creating a peaceful world, answered for me the second question : what to do next after experiencing Cosmic Consciousness? The inner call for me has been to work for the emergence of collective spiritual consciousness for peace on this earth. For spiritual transformation, Indians used the word Yoga; that is, ‘joining’ the ordinary consciousness with the higher consciousness. I prefer to attach the meaning of self-transformation to Yoga and, for me, it carries a better meaning to see it as the self-purification of the existing consciousness—which includes purifying individual psychological consciousness of components such as anger, lust, greed, attachment, violence, etc., and purify the social consciousness (i.e. consciousness about the social order and one’s place in it) about the division of humanity.
Ordinary consciousness is a Limited form of consciousness both in the individual and social sense: it is ego-centric and hence, walled in, and views itself as separative; socially, it is limited and divisive on the basis of nationality, religion, race, territory, culture, language, sex, class, age, etc. The ordinary consciousness, in short, is through and through divisive, separative, and limited—it is like being in a box of one variety or another, be it of one’s ego, of a nation, religion, or whatever. The two, in fact, reinforce each other; the box of ego-centricity and the box of limited social consciousness.
Spirituality, that is, the task of transforming ordinary consciousness, thus becomes a twofold process: it is a process of transformation of the ego-centric consciousness into spiritual consciousness and of the divisive social consciousness into global peace consciousness based on the unity of humankind rather than its division; the two, again, being reinforcing processes. So, viewed spirituality takes on a different, wider and more collective meaning than the received view of spirituality, which is one of individual self-development, even if including some goodness to humanity. This new perspective, which may be termed as Integral Peace Way as compared to other existing world views, combines the spiritual and the social, the two hitherto treated as bifurcated realities of life in most traditions of thought. There can be no sensible social vision without a spiritual basis and no spirituality without a sensible conception of a social order.
One person realizing Cosmic Consciousness is not enough. No one Messiah can save humanity. Enlightened souls can, of course, help in triggering and accelerating the process of spiritual transformation. What we need is a new consciousness, a spiritual consciousness, one the part of millions of people such that eventually Cosmic Consciousness becomes the norm, like the human consciousness became the norm, evolving beyond the ape-consciousness and began to dominate the earth. There was a time when, we may say, the ape-consciousness dominated and then through an evolutionary thrust—to fulfill some evolutionary purpose—the human consciousness evolved. Apes still exist on earth, but ape-consciousness does not dominate; it is the human consciousness which dominates this earth. The story of the struggle between the ape-consciousness and human-consciousness through its superiority of intelligence was able to eventually ‘conquer’, if we may use that word, and transcend the ape-consciousness. Human consciousness has brought us as far as it could. It now generates contradictions—that is, it creates conditions of life as a result of limitation of its stage of development—which it cannot resolve.—Though the human mind is limited by its present stage of development, it is capable of expanding by Enlightenment, by Cosmic Consciousness. The contradictions arising from limited consciousness can be resolved only with a higher level or different type of consciousness; that is, the one in which love, peace, and non-violence dominate, and not the present-day existing consciousness marred by division, violence, and peacelessness.
Enlightenment, or Cosmic Consciousness is an expression for that type of consciousness which has properties which would help humankind to solve their current contradictions, and out of that consciousness would be born social orders which would be congenial for further human evolution for the still higher order spiritual consciousness.
When there are large enough numbers of people with Cosmic Consciousness, through their wisdom and love they would be able to transform the collective human consciousness. This, of course, suggests an entirely different kind of evolutionary agenda from the agenda which the technological and test-tube genetics revolution suggests. Personal enlightenment takes a new meaning. The agenda of individual spiritual transformation becomes the evolutionary agenda of taking the collective consciousness to higher planes and the historical agenda of creating a peaceful world order. Spirituality becomes, in this newly suggested model, a collective advancement of human consciousness. Such a collective spiritual consciousness would be able to get rid of the current violent social structures and create peaceful world order. When large numbers of humans will learn not to live in boxes of ego-centricity, hedonistic boxes of self-love, boxes of nation, religion, culture, sex or class, they will also like to have social arrangements which will break these boxes.
Hitherto there have been two major weaknesses, as I said above, in the received ideas on spirituality. One, that spirituality is for individual development, hence missing its evolutionary and historical purpose. The reason for this may be that human-consciousness was in its developmental stages and had not reached the dead-end which it has now reached. It seems that Nature kept on making experiments with advancement of consciousness through saints and prophets, but every spiritual message or revolution ended, at best, as religious reform and, at worst, as a dogma and handmaid of the oppressive and violent social orders. Thus, in spite of spiritual ideas being available, life kept on grinding in the narrow boxes of individual ego-centricity and divisive social consciousness based on religion, sex, race, class, nationality, etc.
The second hurdle has been the mystification of spirituality, and the cult that spiritual transformation is for the other worldly and is impossible of realization, in addition to its life negating image, hence throwing off millions from any appeal to it. Also spirituality was seen as the stuff for the prophets, a rare species. This has been the most unfortunate trash of history that we have received. In fact, realization of Cosmic Consciousness, the Nirvanic state, Enlightenment, Self-realization, or by whatever other name one likes to call it, is a very realizable goal. It is also a very desirable goal from the collective as well, of course, as from the individual standpoint. Personally, I took about twenty five years because I did not search or find a guide. I was also a victim of the received tradition of spirituality which makes it very esoteric. I had many doubts and wondered if spirituality was not other worldly, and I was and am interested, through and through, in the suffering and happiness of this world. Based on my experience I am now convinced that one does not need that long a time. Must I hazard a time length, I think, for someone who is willing and pursues it programmatically, step by step, five to seven or, at most, ten years is sufficient to reach a high enough altitude while remaining right in the midst of life with no severing away from life. It is interesting to recall that none of the masters took much longer than that once he or she set about the spiritual journey. And there is a clue in this statement: “set about the spiritual journey”. It is like deciding to go to another city, say, from here to New York. Once you start your journey it depends on the means of transport—the method—and the speed and the labour, the time you put in, the two being related. But the journey you must continue; it would come to an end. Most people do not make that kind of resolve, do not take, in other words, their spiritual life seriously. People take their material career and intellectual development quite seriously and do cover a distance in life. But on the spiritual front they do not take definite steps towards a clearly defined and understood journey. Most individuals inherit a kind of consciousness from the family, the school, society at large, which is mostly to rationalize existing social orders (which are oppressive, violent and unspiritual). With some individual development here and there, this received bundle of consciousness, which is not quite their own, they carry all their life, on their heads, quite egotistically calling it their own, and die with this bundle. Deciding to transcend our (acquired) ordinary consciousness and realize Cosmic Consciousness or Spiritual Consciousness, requires practice, like any other practice for becoming a hockey player, a doctor, or an artist.
It took me quite a long time to reach this consciousness. I felt peace, bliss, and oneness with Cosmic Consciousness. There is a constant awareness in me that “I am that consciousness”; I am That”. And I want to share this experience with others. This inner compulsion to share seems to be the nature of this new consciousness. Divine consciousness seems to be expressive.
This letter is essentially a call to those who are interested in peace on this earth and who view spirituality as a part and a basis of the colossal transformation which individual and social life must undergo. That colossal transformation requires a new. consciousness on this earth, a new being. Cosmic Consciousness and a new spiritual being are expressions for that reality which must emerge. That state, in my view, is not here, it is a state “yet-to-be”—this stage is the Next Future—but it is not pre-deterministically guaranteed by the blind and mechanistic laws of Nature, or by pre-ordained Divine Grace. It is something to be worked for; it is a conscious act of moving into or, at least towards, the orbit of new consciousness characterized by an awareness of the unity of all life, love, peace, bliss, and non-violence—characteristics decidedly different from our ordinary normal consciousness. There is no reason to believe that this type of consciousness will automatically arise on this earth to guide the future evolution of humans, that Grace will come as a free gift.
While facts suggest that more and more people in this world are moving towards Cosmic Consciousness or have it, there is also no doubt that violent consciousness (or howsoever we describe .the opposite of Cosmic Consciousness) is also heightening. So much so that sit on the verge of an apocalypse. There is an immediate necessary fire-fighting job of saving the world from nuclear arms race and starvation that kills 40,000 children a day. But in the long run we need a new consciousness and a new world order transcending existing total reality.
Every step towards any new consciousness is usually initially taken by a few. These few, however, can provide the critical springboard for advancement of collective human consciousness. As Cosmic Consciousness spreads, widens and deepens, and becomes the norm, and human consciousness is left behind, like the fossils of some primitive evolutionary past, humanity Will also leave behind the norms of violence, division, exploitation, and oppression. Spiritual beings will wander on this beautiful little planet in love and peace—and may also take the same love and peace to planets beyond. This evolutionary task of realizing Cosmic Consciousness on this earth can be achieved in a relatively short time, notwithstanding the mystification that it is for the few and the chosen.
The first step is the resolve for undertaking this “Voyage of Consciousness”, starting the “Spiritual Uphill”, the “Adventure of Consciousness”, the “Journey of Self-realization”, experiencing “Cosmic Consciousness”, Enlightenment”, “Illumination”, “Nirvana”, or whatever name we use. This may be the time for a definitive beginning for you, for what you might have been getting ready for, for a long time. The immediate objective of this open letter is to bring together a limited number, say, one hundred persons—it is just a convenient and a manageable number in the beginning—who would commit themselves to self-realization and spreading of Cosmic Consciousness: an educational experiment of vast proportions. The only requirement to join this programme, of study and practice with the avowed objective of reaching a definitive goal of realizing Enlightenment, is your resolve to give your own spiritual life the highest priority. I would share with you—as a free spiritual gift—the essence of my techniques, practices, and experiences (none of which are esoteric or require any kind of faith in violation of human reason). One basic element, in fact, of my approach is to learn to “catch hold of the golden thread of your own inner consciousness”; so that no lifetime dependence on a guru or master is needed. By re-directing the constant flow of your own consciousness you can achieve in a short time more than what is achieved through long natural evolution, if at all.
The program of study and practice will be done on a one-to-one basis as well as in group and collective settings. Some living together may become necessary at some point, or some in the group may find it desirable. Ideally, one thinks of a house, a farm and an ashram for such a purpose. Where is this to be found? Where are the resources? I have no answer; nor do we need this material wherewithal right now. When sufficient numbers of people will be together, what is needed will be created.
One last comment. Cosmic Consciousness has the ring of other worldliness. One may ask, “What about everyday life struggle?’ What about poverty, hunger, starvation, oppression of human rights, and so on? In short, what about history? In my view, any spirituality which begins and ends with the individual, no matter how desirable from the individual’s point of view, is limited. Spirituality must purify or help purify social life, if one may use the expression purify, to purge social life of violence, non-truth, inequality, and social suffering in so many forms. It is obvious from historical evidence that social action, devoid of spiritual consciousness—a bare set of intellectual beliefs—has not proven adequate. We have now reached that “Edge of History”, where, to go any further in the right direction, requires transcending our existing human consciousness. The envisioned programme includes, in addition to the study and practice of the techniques of self-transformation, etc., a study of the social world in which we live and future visions of a world order in conformity with the principles of spirituality. We want spiritual world order conforming to spiritual or Cosmic Consciousness characterized by love, truth, non-violence and oneness of all life.
If you want to make a beginning, please get in touch. In giving your own spiritual life the highest priority you may be initiating yourself into a programme which would contribute to the many collective efforts being made in order to make this earth a peaceful planet. Central to the proposed programme is the collective thrust. It is to start with a group that may become the foundation for a Global Movement of the “People of Peace”—following a Path of Enlightenment—who would push forward the wheels of human consciousness for a peaceful world.
The four principles of the “The People of Enlightenment and Peace”, which it is expected you would accept in joining this programme, are:

I recognize the principle of the Unity and Oneness of The Universe (the reality of a Cosmic whole) and the one underlying unifying (Divine) power, as the living principle of life, that runs through everything, including me. I will give the highest priority in my personal life to the spiritual self-realization of this Cosmic Oneness, i.e., Self-Enlightenment (everyday meaning of which is to lead a spiritual life based on Inner Peace, Truth, Love, Cooperation, Sharing, Simplicity, and Harmony with Nature).

I recognize the unity of all life on this planet, which means the unity of all living Nature—e.g., earth, air, water, etc.—animal, plant and human life, and I believe in and will practice adherence to the principle of non-injury to all life.

I recognize the unity of humankind and will cast off moulds of divisive and limited consciousness based on nationality, religion, race, ethnicity, sex, class, age, health, appearance, as unspiritual in nature.

I will work towards a Peaceful World Order for a Human Community that conforms to the above principles transcending today’s violent social orders composed as nation-states which divide humanity in so many ways.
World Vision: Founding the Cosmic Way
The direction of my work and thought after 1984 had its own dynamics. Any experience of Enlightenment usually has the following results.
One begins to see a clear order in one’s life. One gets to understand one’s past and see an inner logic, an order, in all the events of life. The “Mystical Sequence” in life becomes transparent. This understanding of past may go beyond the present life into previous life or lives. My own immediate experience was “understanding” this life and later, “seeing” a much deeper past of mine. This “opening up” of the past helps to see the cumulative, the continuous in one’s long thread of consciousness spanning over many lives. Another effect much talked about relates to a variety of mystical powers—the ‘Siddhis’ in Yoga language—especially spiritual healing which accompanies any deep spiritual experience—endowments that I too was blessed with.
The second effect of Enlightenment is affirmation of universal reality. Every Enlightenment experience has affirmed the Oneness of Existence.
The third effect is experiencing a transcendental state of consciousness characterized by Bliss, Love and Oneness, thus crossing the limits of ego-centric consciousness. Enlightenment is about the widening of consciousness, it is so widened that it becomes one with Cosmic Consciousness.
The fourth result may be called “Sharing of the Spiritual Wealth” and “Touching the Lives” around. Enlightenment radiates, it is soothful;— it brings peace and light (which does not mean that it does not provoke reaction of the negative and evil forces, sometimes leading even to crucifixion and persecution of the Enlightened). Emergence of a group(s) of people, followers, devotees, disciples, or a sect, around those who have pursued spiritual self-perfection is the most common phenomenon.
The fifth effect is not usual; it may or may not occur. Whether or not a world vision will be born of Enlightenment is unpredictable. Every Enlightenment experience does not give birth to a scripture (Gospel) while the birth of every scripture (Gospel) is connected with spiritual Re-birth or Enlightenment. Why is that so? Just as Enlightenment is not the wages of spiritual practice and “Grace” is needed to be blessed with Enlightenment, the birth of a Gospel too is a similar special “Grace”. The Holy Koran reminds us again and again that “Allah alone exalts”. The birth of a World Vision—a Gospel as a pointer for the caravan of humanity—is an exaltation that Allah—the Divine—alone bestows on anyone.
Since 1984 I was spending a good deal of time with individuals and groups of people who were drawn to my “spiritual call”. My trip to India in 1987 was an important part of this “spreading forth”. I had made many trips to India, but the trip in 1987 was a special one for me. I was going to India for the first time after my spiritual experience of June, 1984. It was like taking back home something very precious: Enlightenment! But what is the meaning of such things in a place where there is appalling poverty, corruption, and acute struggle for everyday existence? Life seems too concrete, too rough, for such spiritual pleasantries.
But it was clear to me that I was not turning away from social justice issues, it was an extension and widening of humans’ search for peace on this earth. I was wanting to share a spiritual message—the vision of making a new world—that is meaningful and relevant to our times.
In May, 1987, I founded, together with Syeda Nuzhat (one of my disciples/followers who, too, was visiting India at the time for receiving an award for Peace Poetry), The Center Of Spirituality and World Peace in Delhi. Back in Toronto a lot of ground work had been done and a core group of committed individuals existed.
Guided by the same Light which “gave” me the Gospel of Peace, I founded, on August 16, 1987, the Cosmic Way, A NEW SPIRITUAL PATH.
With the founding of the Cosmic Way, it seems a journey of many lives has come to a completion for me. There is no more work of my own soul left to do; it is the divine work all the way.
Below are reproduced the three statements released regarding the Cosmic Way Mission: (a) The Statement of the Cosmic Way Philosophy; (b) Cosmic Way Practical Work; and, (c) What It Means to Follow the Cosmic Way.
I. Cosmic Way: The Statement of Philosophy
To follow the COSMIC WAY is to accept the GOSPEL OF PEACE as the overall light to spiritualize all life and to realize peace on earth. The four pillars of the GOSPEL OF PEACE are:
(a) Understanding Cosmic Reality: Oneness of All Things.
(b) Understanding Human History: Negation of Oneness.
(c) Birth of New Consciousness: Realizing Oneness.
(d) World Vision: World Community.
A. Understanding Reality: Oneness of All Things
THE GOSPEL OF PEACE affirms that there is one fundamental TRUTH and that “TRUTH IS THE ONENESS OF ALL THINGS”, which for humans has the following threefold meaning:
-
Oneness of Cosmos;
-
Oneness of All Life on Earth, this being a part of the Cosmos;
-
Oneness of Human life; this being a part of All Life on this Earth and of the Cosmos as a whole.
Each and all things exist as a part of the Universal or Cosmic Whole; and one Universal Power, Life-force or Cosmic Consciousness co-ordinates each living and nonliving entity and the Cosmos as a whole.
To evolve from the Natural State of ONENESS OF THINGS to the State of Human Consciousness is to experience separative self-consciousness and thus be out of step with the ONENESS OF THINGS. But it is also the unique human privilege and destiny to realize consciously the ONENESS OF THINGS and in doing so, experience self-perfection and be the active instrument of the ever dynamic unfolding of the Cosmos.
B. Understanding Human History: Negation of Oneness
Human history hitherto has been mainly the negation of ONENESS OF THINGS.
All that is evil in human life is born of this disharmony with the ONENESS OF THINGS.
It is this disharmony with the ONENESS OF THINGS which manifests itself as so many forms of violence.
The present era is the highest stage of this long trend of violence in history. Now human life seems to be set on the path of self-destruction; in fact, the destruction of all life on Earth.
The negation of the ONENESS OF THINGS is the reality of history in spite of the knowledge of “Oneness of Things” being “given” or “revealed” to humanity right from the dawn of history through prophets, saints, sages, and seers in all cultures and regions.
The anguish of history is the conflict between “violence” and “peace” with violence in so many ways and forms dominating and peace forever remaining a marginal Peace now awaits humanity. It is for humans to make the choice whether it will be the post-Apocalyptic peace—the peace of Death—or it will be the peace before the Apocalypse—the peace of Life.
The COSMIC WAY is the way for the full realization of Peace and Enlightenment on Earth for it is the WAY OF ONENESS.
C. Birth of New Consciousness: Realizing Oneness
The COSMIC WAY is the way to realize the ONENESS OF THINGS, it assures the realization of:
i. Human-Divine Oneness;
ii. Human-Nature/Earth Oneness;
iii. Human-Human Oneness.
1. Realizing Human-Divine Oneness: Cosmic Consciousness
THE GOSPEL OF PEACE affirms that there resides within each one of us a Center of Light, a Divine Presence, the Cosmic Consciousness which is the same power that holds each and all together. Realizing oneness with this Cosmic Consciousness is the highest goal of human life and what gives it a true meaning.
Experiencing this state of consciousness has been variedly described in different cultures as Nirvana, Enlightenment, Satori, Illumination, Realizing God, ReBirth, Realizing Supra-mental Consciousness, State of UN-AL-HAQ, Cosmic Consciousness, etc.
The spiritual heritage of humanity suggesting so many ways of realizing this higher state is one of the richest and the most valuable treasures of humanity.
THE GOSPEL OF PEACE upholds the glory of global spirituality, not just of this or that spiritual tradition.
While upholding the global spiritual traditions, the GOSPEL OF PEACE points to CONSCIOUSNESS YOGA the method of transforming existing Human Consciousness to Cosmic Consciousness.
Everyday meaning of leading a spiritual life is to lead a life based on inner peace, truth, non-violence, cooperation, sharing and simplicity.
2. Realizing Human-Nature/Earth Oneness: Eco-Consciousness.
THE GOSPEL OF PEACE affirms the deep spiritual meaning and significance of realizing oneness with Nature and our immediate environment, the Earth-process.
To realize oneness with the Earth-process is to recognize the unity of all life on Earth which means the unity of all living Nature: earth, air, water, plant, animal and human life.
Everyday meaning of realizing Human-Nature oneness is adherence to the value and practice of reverence to and non-injury to all life, and living in harmony with the rhythms and balance of Nature.
3. Realizing Human-Human Oneness: Global Consciousness
Realizing oneness with humankind is to realize Global Peace Consciousness and leave behind existing consciousness which rationalizes violence and division of humanity based on nationalism, race, religion, culture, language, class, sex, age, health or looks.
To develop Global Peace Consciousness is to develop a sense of identifying with the entire human heritage and be able to proclaim:
“I AM THE INHERITOR OF ALL SCRIPTURES”;
“I AM THE INHERITOR OF ALL CULTURES”;
“I AM THE INHERITOR OF ALL HISTORY”.
Humanity at the present lives in so many prison cells of cultures and limited traditions.
The prophecy of the GOSPEL OF PEACE is the realization of the spiritual unity of humanity.
With the realization of the spiritual unity of humanity will come the social—unity as also the emancipation of humanity from so many shackles, including the shackles which bind humanity to exclusive prophets, scriptures and cultural traditions.
4. World Vision: World Community
THE GOSPEL OF PEACE has a twofold world vision:
(i) SPIRITUAL TRANSFORMATION OF HUMANITY from the existing state of human consciousness (characterized by ego-centricity and social divisions) to realize Cosmic Consciousness (characterized by Love, Bliss and Oneness).
Hitherto the lamp of peace and enlightenment has been kept alive by prophets, sages, saints and seers. The prophecy of the GOSPEL OF PEACE is that humanity is passing from the era of the prophets to the era of the prophetic-spirit, when no one prophet or few enlightened individuals will have transformed consciousness, but millions, nay all humanity, will make the journey from existing HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS TO COSMIC CONSCIOUSNESS.
(ii) SOCIAL TRANSFORMATION OF HUMANITY from existing social orders (characterized by violence and so many divisions) to a Peaceful World Order: a world community, based on the principles of sharing, meeting basic human needs, non-violence, cooperation and harmony with Nature.
The human instrument of realizing this twofold world vision are the PEOPLE OF PEACE AND ENLIGHTENMENT; that is, those following the COSMIC WAY: THE WAY OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE—while in the tradition of the ancient initiates they are the NEW INITIATES for the Age of Peace and Enlightenment on Earth.
II. Cosmic Way World Peace Community: A Practical Realization
The Cosmic Way World Peace Community is committed to:

Spirituality;
-
Ecology; and,
-
Peace: As a Just and a Peaceful World Order
1. Introductory: Why Cosmic Way Community?
We need an objective statement of a philosophy, a doctrine, a world outlook, whatever we may call it. The next step is to put the thought into practice. Once we think of putting a philosophy or a set of values into practice beyond the individual level, we are talking of a social process for which we need a social organization or a social instrument.
If we look across history we find that we have passed through two broad eras. The pre-modern era was the “religious era” in which organized religion was the dominant mode of social organization. The modern era is the “secular era” in which secular organizations like political parties have become the dominant mode. What is the next era and what is the next instrument of social change?
The prophecy of the Cosmic Way is that we are transcending both religious and secular consciousness together with the corresponding values, and we are entering a new era: the “spiritual era”, the era of the “prophetic-spirit”.
In the era of the “prophetic-spirit” not one or even a few prophets will lead the world but there would be a spiritual transformation of the collective consciousness of humanity. The instrument of this social transformation will be neither organized religions, nor political parties, but spiritual and peace communities: people sharing values based on acceptance of oneness of humanity; in fact, of all life on this earth of which human life is one part.
Such spiritual and peace communities would be free from the dogma of religion and the obsessive pre-occupation of the secular era with economics and politics. These communities would recognize the inviolable integrity of the individual soul and central to these would be pursuance of Peace and Enlightenment.
The major objective in the new era must be the social organization of humanity as a Human Family: transcending today’s divisions and violence and living in harmony with Nature.
The Cosmic Way World Peace Community is founded to be a living example of the oneness of humanity and of all life. It is not intended to add one more separation to the existing separateness of humanity. It is not like the old communities which tend to be too local, parochial and inward looking. Nor is Cosmic Way Community a cult, or a sectarian, ethnic, religious, or a national community. It is a global community in the sense of the pursuit and practice of some basic common global values: values based on the recognition of the spiritual unity of humanity and oneness of life.
2. Aims and Objectives

To bring together into a community framework those individuals, families and groups of people who want to give a real life meaning to the Cosmic Way: The Way of Oneness of All Things.

To disseminate the Cosmic Way, through various educational activities and through exemplary living.
-
To provide community support to the spiritual development of individuals and families.
-
To work towards the realization of the Cosmic Way World Vision.
3. How the World Community Functions?
The Cosmic Way Peace Community is intended to be a World Community; composed of local communities in different parts of the world. The work of the community is at the following levels:
(i) Individual:
Fundamental to the Cosmic Way is the spiritualization of all life. The starting point of spiritualization is the individual. The Cosmic Way affirms that there is one all pervading Cosmic Power which holds each and all together. This power exists as a center of light within each one of us. Realizing this light is the highest goal of human life. Spirituality is, therefore, the basis of doing everything for the people of the Cosmic Way.
(ii) Biological Family:
Family is going through a tremendous change in modern times. While the traditional conception of family is changing, family still remains the basic social institution through which children are brought up.
The Cosmic Way World Peace community attaches great importance to the imparting of the Cosmic Way values and attitudes to the children to whom the future truly belongs. Family is, in other words, the basic instrument of creating New Consciousness, the three components of which are: (a) Global Awareness; (b) Ecological Awareness; and, (c) Cosmic Awareness.
The operational meaning of this new consciousness is to live by new values, let us call them Cosmic Way Values or World Peace Values: The equality of al humans, sharing and meeting human needs, love, co-operation, nonviolence, living in harmony with Nature, recognizing the beauty and mystery of life, etc.
The education of children and inculcating of this new consciousness and new values is the work to which the Cosmic Way Community gives the highest priority.
The Cosmic Way Community is to play an important role in strengthening the individual families for the spiritual education of children and, in turn, the family is the basic instrument to strengthen the work of the community.
(iii) Spiritual Family—Community:
Most people live within the framework of biological consciousness and are conditioned to think that “My Family is My World”. The Cosmic Way is the way of expansion of consciousness to go beyond the limits of the biological family and be able to say “THE WORLD IS MY FAMILY”.
While individual is the basic unit of spiritual life there is no real life expression of spirituality outside of community. Conceptually, each one of us belongs to all life. But as the immediate and lived experience, the Cosmic Way affirms community as a “Spiritual Family” for the fulfillment of human life. The Cosmic Way Community, sharing a common value system, is to be the immediate “Spiritual Family” for the members of the community.
Local Cosmic Way Communities will hold regular events highlighting the underlying unity of global spirituality, global cultures and global history. A regular feature of each local community is a monthly event to bring together the members and introduce the Cosmic Way to the new members.
(iv) Cosmic Way Centers:
Ideally, there should be one center of each local community which, of course, depends on the availability of resources, both financial and human. Big metropolitan cities need more than one place where individuals and families can get together. Few families who find it feasible and satisfying may use their family facilities as centers of activities: small group meetings, meditation classes, discourses on special topics, study groups, etc. Such Cosmic Way Centers operating from individual families are very valuable, especially during the transitional period when resources for a local center are not available.
(v) World Order of Peace and Enlightenment
Cosmic Way World Peace Community has a Spiritual Order. The “Order” is intended to bring into a network those individuals who want to give the highest priority to their own spiritual development and be the active disseminators of the Cosmic Way. The “Order” is, in other words, composed of those who want to set the goal of realizing spiritual Enlightenment in this life time. The “Order” is the beacon of light both for the Cosmic Way Community and for the humankind as a whole.
The “Order” may be described as the very spine of the Cosmic Way World Peace Community. The “Order” is not envisioned as a monastic order. It is right in the midst of life and through life that members of the “Order” are supposed to seek their Enlightenment.
The fourfold duties of the members of the “Order” are: Study (of the meaning of Oneness of All Things); Spiritual Practice; Dissemination; and Social Service.
4. Some Projects of The Cosmic Way World Peace Community
(i) World University of Peace:
World University of Peace (W.U.P.) based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is a non-profit making, non-degree awarding institution engaged in disseminating the Integral Peace World Outlook (or Paradigm) the essence of which is the connection between the spiritual and the social; and doing Peace Education work based on this philosophy.
(ii) Global Child Development Foundation:
Cosmic Way World Peace Community gives very high priority to social service and one such service to which it attaches special significance is service to the disprivileged children of the world.
There are millions of children who are caught up in the mess of poverty, malnutrition, and abuse of all varieties. The foundation is an instrument to reach out to some of these children by providing financial help for completing education, making available educational material that may help to expand their consciousness and inculcate character building qualities to prepare them to play a leadership role in the future.
These, children of the Cosmic Way Peace Community are the best hope that the community has for itself and the world at large.
(iii) Journals:1
(a) “Cosmic Way” magazine is a newsletter of the World Community’s work as well as an instrument for disseminating its outlook.
(b) “Literary Peace Journal” is a journal aimed at contributing to the literary peace movement; i.e., a movement of “Literature for Peace”.
5. How to Participate in The Cosmic Way Community’?
Each individual is expected to make a conscious choice to follow the Cosmic Way and be a member of the Community in a manner and at a level depending on the call from within.
6. Concluding Remarks
The multi-dimensional work of the Cosmic Way World Peace Community which is underway or is at the developmental stage cannot be captured within a brief statement. The World Community, like the many branches of a great tree, must spread out into various parts of the world. Already efforts are being made to “plant the seed of work” in various countries and continents: India, Africa, Caribbean, North America, etc. It is an inspirational and voluntary work for seeking self- fulfillment and for the larger social good. The basic thrust of the work is the realization of the spiritual unity of humanity and the unity of all life on this earth.
The mode of operation of the Cosmic Way Community is solely educational. This work, even in a world of global communication networks, needs many centers and the support of very many individuals. Obviously, activities and projects start where the participant individuals happen to be.
III. What it Means to Follow The Cosmic Way
Anyone can be a member of the World Peace Community and of the World Order of Peace and Enlightenment and, accordingly, undertake the following—first three, or all of the five "vows".
1. I recognize the Oneness of All Existence and the one underlying Living Principle, Divine Power, Life-Force or Cosmic Consciousness which pervades each and all things and holds all together.
All knowledge, like all existence itself, emanates from this one Divine Reality.
The knowledge about the "Oneness of All Existence" too, is rooted in this Divine Reality and its divine manifestation has occurred many a time as this knowledge has been "given" or "revealed" to humanity since the dawn of human history.
I recognize that The Gospel of Peace is another such divine manifestation to usher in the era of the prophetic- spirit when the human race as a whole would experience transformation and make its journey from "Human Consciousness to Cosmic Consciousness"; i.e., from its present level of consciousness to a higher level characterized by Oneness, Love and Bliss.
I undertake to give the highest priority in my personal life to my spiritual journey and to the realization of oneness with the Divine Power that resides within each one of us as a center of 'Light. The practical implication of leading a spiritual life for me is the pursuance and adherence to the values of Inner Peace, Truth, Non- Violence, Co-operation and Sharing.
2. I recognize the Oneness of Life on this Earth which is, in turn, a part of the Cosmic Whole.
I undertake to live in harmony with the rhythms of Nature and with reverence to and non-injury to all life: Earth, Air Water, Plant, Animal and Human life.
3. I recognize the Oneness of Human Life which, in turn, is a part of the oneness of all life on this Earth and of the Cosmic Whole.
I undertake to transcend the ideas and values which divide humanity on the basis of nationalism, religion, culture, language, class, sex, age, looks, etc. and deem myself to be the inheritor of all world history, of all world cultures and of all world scriptures.
I undertake to support the realization of a Just and a Peaceful World Order based on the values of meeting basic human needs, sharing, co-operation, non-violence and being in harmony with Nature.
4. As a member of the “World Order of Peace and Enlightenment” I undertake:
(a) to do regular study of the philosophy of the Cosmic Way and disseminate it; and,
(b) to do some form of social service consistent with the overall outlook and ideals of the Cosmic Way.
5. I undertake to uphold the integrity of the “Order” always keeping in view the highest norms of the most sacred of all human traditions, the spiritual tradition.
Final Reflections
I. Two Dimensions of Reality—Physical and Spiritual
Understanding the nature of “Reality” has been human’s oldest challenge and a pass time. But what is “Reality”? Modern Science—starting with 1500 A.D. through the works of Galileo, Newton, to Einstein—inquires into the nature of the Physical Universe. The focus of Modern Science is, in other words, on the Physical Reality, the Reality that can be seen—with the sense-mind. To understand the nature of the Physical Universe has come to mean to understand “how” the Universe functions or works. The main thrust of science has been to study how various parts of the Universe function and fit into each other, and not the Universe as a whole. Also, the Universe has been assumed to be inanimate—a machine—and not a living organism or a reality, thus leading to a materialist mechanistic view of Nature. Discovering the “laws” of the working of the Universe is the enterprise that modern science has been following for the last about five hundred years. During the eighteenth century, social reality, the human dimension of the Physical Reality if we may call it so, became the subject of interest in Europe, where the ideas of modern science had developed. The “scientific perspective” began to be applied to society and the “Social Science(s)” emerged comparable to the “Physical or Natural Science(s)”. The making of our “Modern Mind” is a result of these ideas. But this is not how the ancient sages, saints, prophets, wise ones—whatever we may call them as compared to the modern scientists—saw Reality. They saw Physical Reality as always changing. Nothing stays still. In the Bhagavad—Gita, Lord Krishna warns how “He”—the Creator—is ever in motion and changing and if ‘He were to sit still all will come to a halt, life will cease. Life is incessant motion. The Great Buddha speaks of the Law of Impermanence. Other traditions Judaic, Christian, Islamic, African, etc. point to the same process of change in the physical world. Is there a “Constant behind the Inconstant”? The answer of most of the pre-modern cosmological thinking is that there is a Constant, an Eternal behind the inconstant and non-eternal, ever changing Physical Reality. This permanent is the Ultimate Reality, not the impermanent Physical Universe which comes into being and goes out of being. This Ultimate Reality was there when the Physical Universe was not there, will be there when the Physical Universe will not be there, and is there while the Physical Universe is in process. The Physical Universe, in other words, is born of this Ultimate Reality, lives in it or is sustained by it and will eventually dissolve into it. This Ultimate Reality is not a passive sheet or a screen on which changes are being recorded, but instead, it is a Living Force and a Principle which moves and gives meaning to the Physical Universe. How to know this Ultimate Reality became the question for many of the pre-modern thinkers. The answer was that it cannot be seen with the sense-mind. It is not an objective reality, like the Physical Universe. It is the Unseen and the Unseeable Living Principle. It is everywhere and also within each human. It is like the thread that runs through the beads of all existence and holds all together. Each one of us has this cosmic thread—of a Living Force or Principle—pass through us, and each one of us can sense it or experience it. Thus, while knowing the Physical Universe is a matter of an objective understanding of an objective reality; knowing the Ultimate Reality (behind the Physical Universe) is a matter of subjective realization of a non-objective Reality (in the sense of its not being amenable to senses). The two methods, the method(s) of modern science and the pre-modern method(s) of directly apprehending the Ultimate Reality—all pervasive and within each of us—are two distinct methods about the two dimensions of Reality: the Phenomenal Empirical Reality and the Ultimate Eternal Reality. The scientific method and the spiritual or mystical method differ for this basic reason. But this does not give equality or autonomy to the scientific method—and to the human enterprise of understanding the Physical Universe. The primacy must remain with our understanding the Ultimate Reality; the Eternal Living Power that underlies each and all and is within us too, i.e. our spiritual enterprise. Putting it differently, spirituality must guide science because “Spiritual Knowledge” is the “Higher Knowledge”—it pertains to the Higher or Ultimate Reality. Modern science recognizes only the reality of the Physical Universe and that too in a particular way—in its mechanical aspect; a viewpoint which is, of course, being questioned from within contemporary science itself
II. Cosmic Way: A Spiritual Worldview
The Cosmic Way recognizes both realities, the reality of the Physical Universe and the Reality of the unseen Living Principle or Cosmic Consciousness underlying the Physical Universe. But the Cosmic Way gives primacy to Cosmic Consciousness. The Cosmic Way, therefore, offers a Spiritual World View, as compared to the modern Materialist or Scientific Materialist World View. As a spiritual world view—that is, in its recognition of the underlying Living Power that permeates the Physical Universe, including each one of us—the Cosmic Way has implications for modern science (that is, our study of Nature), social orders, and for individual development. Spirituality takes a central place in the Cosmic Way. Every world outlook has a ‘key’ to it; the key of the Cosmic Way is spirituality—keeping in view that the starting point of any spirituality should be the recognition of the material basic (needs) of life.
Spirituality is about the direct apprehending and experiencing of that Ultimate Reality: the unseen Living Power, Cosmic Consciousness, the Light within, whatever we may call it. And this realization demands selftranscendence, which requires very rigorous self-discipline and application of a combination of techniques and procedures. Most of the accounts of spiritual journeys are full of arduous uphill, inner struggle and suffering. The reason for this seems to be that spirituality is about the perfection of the evolutionary process itself. Spirituality is purification- of the empirical consciousness such that the Cosmic Consciousness shines more within. The ultimate aim of spiritual transformation being the total’ Enlightenment of existing consciousness. The GOSPEL OF PEACE is born of that Enlightenment.
III. Revelatory Nature of Spiritual Experience
Every mystical experience unravels some mystery, reveals some hidden reality. As said earlier, one aspect of this is personal. The individual understands the “mystical” meaning and purpose of one’s life; that is, the underlying hidden or unknown purpose of one’s individual existence in the vast scheme of things. The other aspect may be “Revelations” beyond the personal. These “Revelations” often have two clear characteristics. One, these revelations are not the product of analytical thinking; secondly, they are for a universal purpose. “Revelations” are from a source beyond. What is that source? Is it the Supra-mental within us? Is it the Cosmic Consciousness working through an individual in a way we do not fully understand? . These are eternally debated issues. My experience confirms the latter. Also, is the revealed word “heard”, “seen”, or “understood”? In other words, is the experience audio, visual, or some kind of direct perception? My own experience is not of the audio type, but of the last two varieties. But one thing is clear, that the “Gospel of Peace” is not the product of my normal analytical thinking. It does not mean that the mind does not participate in receiving what is being “revealed”. After all, how can one even function without mind?
IV. Cosmic Way: A New Spiritual Path, Not a Religion
Before closing, let me deal with one question which keeps coming up. Is the Cosmic Way a new religion? The answer is “NO”; The Cosmic Way is not a religion, it is a NEW SPIRITUAL WAY, or a PATH. It is not just a speculative system of thought so the expression philosophy is not appropriate either; nor is the Cosmic Way an “ism” in the secular political sense of the term. The expression Way or Path implies both a doctrine, a philosophy and its practice. Hence the expression Way or Path describes better than any other expression.
Religion emphasizes faith and obedience to an external authority—to a book, a church, a set of rules, etc. Spirituality is about understanding of one’s own inner self, one’s own consciousness and its transformation. Spirituality is basically self-directed even if there is the support or guidance of a Guru, a spiritual teacher, or techniques. Religion, instead, is externally guided. The concern of religion, in social institutional form, is the preservation of social order. The concern of spirituality is the individual’s inner development. As a Spiritual Way or a Path, the Cosmic Way is in the lineage of global spiritual traditions—not global religious traditions. To understand the Cosmic Way, one should connect it with that core of human thought in every cultural tradition which most people understand as mystical or spiritual.
Finally, the Divine voice that woke me in the middle of the night some four years ago to “give” me the Gospel of Peace—a voice hidden within each one of us—says to me; to you; to the Universal Human:

AND THE DAWN OF ENLIGHTENMENT COME.
The real life name of MAITREYA is Madan Handa, who is currently a Professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (O.I.S.E.), University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Following the age-old tradition according to which, with experience of spiritual Enlightenment, a lot of the old falls and that may include the name given at physical birth by the parents and society, the author has taken the name “MAITREYA”—literally meaning a compassionate or loving “FRIEND”—for purposes of spiritual work.
The anguish of the soul, of the inner self, and the suffering of humanity—”my larger family”, as MAITREYA calls it—became his deep interests from early childhood. The son of a policeman MAITREYA grew up in and around the police stations in colonial India, watching closely the degrading third degree torture, corruption that unchecked power brings, and in the midst of rural poverty in a small village in North India. Understanding the “reality of history “ and the “reality of soul”, he says, became his two passions, his two searches, As a professional social scientist he has wide interests, doing graduate teaching and writing work ranging over Political Economy, Third World Thought, Gandhian Alternative, Historiography and, in most recent years, concentrating on Peace Paradigm; that is, an alternative standpoint of peace and Peace Education.
“But”, he says, “the real riddle of life is not intellectual, it is spiritual”. And it is his spiritual journey—his understanding of the world of the soul—that has given him not only his personal Enlightenment, but also a World Vision. He constantly reminds us: “humanity does not need just another intellectual ‘worldview’ or a ‘paradigm’, a ‘New Story’, or a ‘New Metaphor’ to understand or re-interpret reality. Humanity awaits a new Scripture; a new way of being, a new set of values, a new pointer for the next stage of the human journey. A Scripture is Divine’s way of guiding history; as ever, it is, of course, up to humanity what to make of it: the curse and blessing of human choice. The Gospel of Peace is not my intellectual product, it is born of the Divine Light within, experiencing oneness with which is the highest goal of human life.”

Born of the spiritual Light within—hidden within all of us—GOSPEL OF PEACE is the “Divine Pointer” for the caravan of humanity. It upholds the global spiritual traditions and the essence of all previous scriptures—the Oneness of Ultimate Reality. Gospel of Peace is the thread to knit the many beads of global scriptures. Gospel of Peace is the light to see the organic oneness of the scriptural flower, of which each scripture is a petal. No one scripture can be fully understood except in the light of all scriptures, the summation of the human spiritual experience. Gospel of Peace is about that summation: the spiritual Oneness of Humanity—nay; of all life on this earth and about the Oneness of the Cosmos of which all life is a part.
